Service Committee
At our meeting Tuesday night, December 9th, we decided to form a Service Committee, and the members didn't waste any time! A food drive was held on the weekend. If you're interested in joining the Service Committee, or helping out in other ways, please fill out our Volunteer form.
Orphaned HQ Items Seeking Owners
If you loaned tables to the State College Headquarters, or forgot to pick up dishes, jackets, etc., please call the office at 814-234-8464. We'd like to get your things back to you.
We have to clear out everything we aren't keeping in the next several days. Unclaimed and surplus items will be given to local charities.
Inauguration Bus Trip
Please see our Events page for more information. And PLEASE BE AWARE that crooks are scamming Inaugural tickets--DO NOT BUY from E-Bay, etc. NO legitimate tickets are available, yet, from any source. Official information can be found on the following two sites: the Presidential Inauguration Committee site and the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies site, also linked on our Links page.
UPDATE (11/24/08) To those of you who expressed interest in taking a bus from State College to the inauguration:
Since we did not get many people interested in the overnight option, we have decided to forego that option.
While most of those who responded had an interest in a one day trip, there was still not enough to fill a whole bus. Also, the bus company is saying that they are not able to drive into the city on the 20th so they would have to drop people off at the Metro stations. I am now thinking that the best option for those who want to go for the day is to call Fullington directly 800-252-3893 and sign up with them for their day trip.
I am still hoping that we get a large contingent from State College in D.C. that day to celebrate this exciting, historical moment.
Sue Werner
UPDATE (11/13/08) Forwarded for Senator Casey's office:
Senator Bob Casey's office is no longer taking requests for inauguration tickets since the demand is so overwhelming. By mid-afternoon Monday our office had received requests for over 5,000 tickets. Each Senator receives only a few hundred tickets to distribute.
See the Pennsylvania Dems Website for information on Inauguration Hotel Packages.
Sad News (11/13/08)
Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll died last night after a courageous battle with cancer. See Governor Rendell's press release outlining her many achievements, including being the first woman ever elected Lt. Gov. in this state.
The Committee Chair wishes to add that Catherine was always willing to come to speak with us and that her dedication, encouragement and support will be deeply missed.
Yard Sign Recycling
Centre County Solid Waste is recycling the bags from yard signs [not the solid signs, just the bag version]. While supplies last, they will give you a reusable shopping bag made from recycled materials. To get the reusable bag, please don't put the signs out with your normal recycling--instead take them to the facility. If you'd rather we recycle the bag signs for you, we'll be glad to do so. Scott Conklin, Joanne Tosti-Vasey and Mark McCracken would like their signs back.
Please bring any signs you wish to return to the back door of the State College headquarters [the other 2 offices are closed now], and lean them against the wall. Please don't bring them to the Allen St. door--it's a lot easier to manage them on the alley side. We will return them to candidates or recycle and keep the wires for future use.
Thank-you!!
The Committee would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers who participated in this historic event. Thank-you!! We couldn't have done it without you!
Move and Updates
The Centre County Democrats will be moving soon -- check back to find out the new location, which will be listed here. For the time being, however, our phone number will remain the same, 814-234-8464.
Further updates to the Website will be coming soon, as well, as we move into the post-election season.
Election Turnout and Results
Approximately 75,000 people in Centre County showed up at the polls on Election Day, beating the turnout of the 2004 Presidential election, which saw 65,013 go to the polls. This year's turnout was a record for Centre County, and included many new voters, most of whom were registered Democrats!
